POKOTABI / PLACES WORTH A DETOUR
麺屋 婆娑羅
In Kitasenzoku, Ota Ward, Menya Basara has built its reputation on heaping mounds of vegetables paired with hearty, thick-cut noodles served ramen- or tsukemen-style. Here is a look at the satisfying noodles, the complimentary boiled eggs, and practical tips for their daytime-only hours.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Known for bowls heaped with towering mounds of vegetables, robust thick noodles, and a sharp hit of aromatic spice, Menya Basara sits in Kitasenzoku, Ota Ward. Beyond standard ramen, the tantanmen and tantan tsukemen stand out prominently, bringing a brisk, tingling warmth to an intensely hearty portion.
The star of the bowl is the curly, ultra-thick noodle, commanding attention even in the boiling cauldron. Boasting a rugged, chewy bite, it holds up effortlessly against the rich broth and back fat laced with chilli oil, star anise, and pepper. Thickly sliced chashu, tender braised pork belly steeped in sweet-savoury sauce, and the occasional refreshing lift of yuzu keep the palate engaged from the first bite to the last.
Even the small size carries more heft than a standard bowl of ramen, making a modest portion the safest bet on a first visit. The shop also provides complimentary boiled eggs—up to 1 per person—which diners traditionally peel and dip into the soup as a welcome palate cleanser between bites.
Seating consists primarily of counter spots, arranged comfortably for solo diners to focus on their meal without distraction. Service is limited to daytime hours, running from 11:30 to 14:30 every day except Sunday, with orders paid in cash at the ticket vending machine.
